Skelton's heroics in vain for Horspath 2nd

SKIPPER Mark Skelton found himself fighting a lone battle as Horspath 2nd crashed to an 85-run defeat at Abingdon Vale in Cherwell League Division 1. Facing Abingdon's 182 all out after putting the hosts in to bat, Skelton hit an unbeaten 57 off 67 balls, with two sixes and eight fours, but not one of his teammates could muster double figures. It saw Horspath bowled out for 97, with Jeisimhan Diwakar (4-13) and left-arm spinner Paul White (3-9) wreaking havoc. Earlier, Horspath had put up a good effort in the field with Jason Cardy (3-27), Jehan Mohammed (3-49) and Skelton (2-33) holding Abingdon in check. Tim Chilvers grafted his way to 33, before Henry Pickford hit a breezy 31 for Vale. The defeat leaves Horspath 20 points adrift at the foot of the table. Horspath 3rd's batsmen also failed to fire as they slipped to a three-wicket defeat at home to Stokenchurch in a low-scoring Division 4 encounter. The hosts were shot out for 85 off 32 overs after being put in to bat, with Josh Triggs (6-29) doing the damage. Horspath made the visitors fight for the runs with two wickets apiece for Ryan Hicks, Ceri Holmes and Stuart Berry plus one for James Stacey. But Stokenchurch got over the line at 88-7 from 24 overs, with Chris North unbeaten on 23. Horspath 4th went down to a seven-wicket defeat at Westbury 2nd in Division 7. Electing to bat first, Horspath were restricted to 133-9, with new recruit Nigel Coltman, from Garsington, making 47 as Nick Blithe (4-34) shone with the ball. Alex Lees then hit an unbeaten 66 to steer Westbury to 136-3 from 24.5 overs, Trevor Spindler taking 3-60.
