Horspath 3rd off mark in dramatic finish

HORSPATH 3rd reorded their first win in Cherwell League Division 4 with a thrilling one-run victory at Brackley. Defending 126 after being put in to bat, Horspath put up a terrific effort in the field to bowl out the hosts for 125. Needing eight off the final over bowled by James Earnshaw with the last pair at the crease, Brackley picked up two singles before Keith Cartwright struck a boundary off the fifth delivery. That left them requiring two to win off the last ball, and when it struck Cartwright's pad the Brackley batsmen set off for a leg bye in a bid to tie the scores. But Horspath wicket-keeper Alex Thomas smartly reacted to send the ball down the pitch to Earnshaw at the bowler's end and he ran out Brackley's No 11 to secure a dramatic victory. Earnshaw finished with 2-20, while Stuart Berry picked up 3-26 and Mohson Rana 2-6. There was also one wicket apiece for Ryan Hicks and Ceri Holmes. Earlier, Thomas had top-scored in Horspath's innings with 41, while Rob Cartwright (3-24) and Doug Smith (3-29) led the way for Brackley. The win moves Horspath up two places to seventh. Horspath 2nd produced a much-improved display before being denied a first victory in Division 1 by Aston Rowant 2nd's last pair. The hosts racked up 255-9 after being put in to bat, with Jehan Mohammed hitting six fours in his 53 off 92 balls. Andy Roberts smashed three sixes, including one of the last ball of the innings, in an unbeaten 47 from 39 deliveries, while there were also useful contributions from opener Jamie Stead (31) and Stephen Green (30). William Barker and Sasha Barras both took 3-52 for Rowant, who were then held to 164-9 in reply with Dom Whatmore making an unbeaten 31 to foil the hosts. Graham Beer (3-18) impressed with the ball for Horspath, while Asad Rafiq (2-17) and skipper Mark Skelton (2-39) provided good support along with Jehan, who took 1-12 off 11 accurate overs. New recruit Craig Wharton hit an unbeaten 81 as Horspath 4th posted their first win in Division 7 with a seven-wicket home success over leaders Aston Rowant 4th. Chasing Rowant's 176-8 after putting the visitors in to bat, Wharton, who has joined from Garsington, shared an excellent opening stand with Carl Thompson (44) to set Horspath on the way to victory at 179-3 off 35.4 overs. Earlier, there were good spells from a youthful home attack with 12-year-old Charlie Turner taking 2-53 backed up by Tom Smith (3-44), Hayden Moon (2-44) and George Horsley (1-31). Jamie Revill (54) top-scored for Rowant.
