Horspath stay top despite losing unbeaten run

HORSPATH remain top of the South Group in the Bernard Tollett Oxfordshire Cup despite seeing their unbeaten run come to an end with a three-wicket defeat at home to Cumnor Bears in a low-scoring encounter. Going into the game having won their previous four ties in the Twenty20 competition, Horspath were only able to post 91-8 after Toby Strong took 4-10 to destroy the top order. Skipper Will Eason (25) attempted to lead a rally, but with Alex Davies picking up 2-25, the hosts' total looked well below par. However, they made Cumnor fight for the runs, and but for opener James Lee making 37 they may have pulled off an unlikely victory. With no other Bears batsman reaching double figures, the visitors finally got over the line at 92-7 with 11 balls to spare, despite the admirable efforts of Tom Cosford (3-14), Lloyd Belcher (2-7) and Jehan Mohammed (2-20). Horspath's lead at the top is now just one point over Thame, with two games to play. The group winners go into the Bernard Tollett Oxfordshire Cup final, with the runners-up progressing to the Wilf Bennett Trophy final. Horspath are due to continue their challenge away to Didcot next week. Before then, Horspath face Harefield in the Home Counties Premier League Twenty20 semi-finals at Burnham on Sunday (11am). Reigning champions High Wycombe take on Henley in the other semi-final at the same venue, with the final to follow in the afternoon.
