Horspath 2nd on brink of going down

HORSPATH 2nd are on the verge of relegation from Cherwell League Division 1 after a five-wicket home defeat by Oxford Downs. The side are now 70 points from safety, and with 75 to play for, they need something approaching a miracle to stay up. Horspath made a disastrous start, slumping to 0-2 after being put in to bat, and they never recovered in being bowled out for 116. Andy Roberts (25) top-scored as Tom Costley (3-26) did much of the early damage, before Wasim Mehmood (4-19) stepped in to ensure there was no way back. Jason Cardy produced a terrific opening spell to take 3-17 and reduce Downs to 48-3, but the hosts' total was never likely to be enough and the visitors clinched victory at 119-5, despite two late wickets for Jehan Mohammed. Horspath 3rd's hopes of climbing off the bottom of Division 4 were dashed following a four-wicket defeat in their basement battle at Dinton 2nd. Having been put in to bat, Horspath were bowled out for just 106, with only Stuart Berry (34) showing any resistance. Dinton then eased to 107-6, despite the efforts of Berry, who took 4-23 as Tali Husain (58no) steered the hosts home. Horspath are now 29 points adrift at the foot of the table. Mike Naylor's unbeaten 90 proved in vain as Horspath 4th slipped to a three-wicket defeat at home to bottom club Long Marston 3rd in Division 7. Naylor's excellent knock helped Horspath post 190-9 after they had been put in to bat, with skipper Carl Thompson weighing in with 38. However, Horspath found themselves on the wrong end of a century for the second successive week as James Beesley hit an unbeaten 133 to steer Long Marston home at 194-7 with a ball to spare. Trevor Spindler produced his usual tight spell to take 4-25, but it couldn't stop the visitors.
