Horspath 2nd's survival hopes take a battering

HORSPATH 2nd's survival hopes in Cherwell League Division 1 look increasingly bleak following a nine-run defeat at Aston Rowant 2nd in their basement battle. A decent bowling display saw Horspath restrict Rowant to 212-5 after putting them in to bat. Chris Eaton, who made 94 off 124 balls with 12 fours, and Tim Morgan, whose 56 came from 120 deliveries and contained a six and four boundaries, put on 153 for the first wicket. However, the hosts were pegged back by Horspath skipper Mark Skelton (2-38) and Jehan Mohammed, who conceded just 29 from his ten overs. In reply, the visitors lost wickets at regular intervals and were 119-5 when Skelton was out for 34. But then Graham Beer, with 56 from 62 balls, which included a six and five fours, and James Stacey (27) put on 64 for the sixth wicket to lift Horspath's hopes of victory. However, the last four wickets went down for 20 runs with three run outs as Horspath, who are now 27 points adrift of Rowant at the foot of the table, fell short. Horspath 3rd also remain bottom in Division 4 following a four-wicket defeat at home to Brackley. Adrian Manger (41) top-scored as the hosts were bowled out for 191 after being put in to bat. There were also handy contributions from Derek Watts (27), Dan Jones (24), Chris Jones (23) and Nigel Coltman (22), but no-one was able to go on and make a notable score as Michael Lowe took 3-71 for the visitors. Opener Eric Carpenter (50) laid the foundations for Brackley's run chase with good support from Luke Stone (38) and Lowe (29), before Joshua Markham (26no) got them over the line as Stuart Berry took 4-65. Horspath 4th were blown away by a brilliant all-round performance by Aston Rowant 4th's youngster James Coles, who hit an unbeaten 129 before taking 6-23 to give the hosts a 147-run victory in Division 7. Coles's terrific ton took Rowant to 252-3 after they had been put in to bat. The Oxfordshire Under 14s star shared an opening stand of 153 with Jonathan Atkins (55) as Josh Richardson took 2-42 for Horspath. Coles then polished off Horspath for 105 with Gareth Hamilton (35) the only batsman to show any resistance.
