Wharton shines as Horspath 4th stay up

HORSPATH 4th were celebrating after staying up in Cherwell League Division 7 with a convincing seven-wicket win at relegation rivals Cublington 2nd, who finish in the bottom two. Knowing they had to win to secure their status, Horspath produced a good display with the ball to restrict Cublington to 152-6 after putting the hosts in to bat. Craig Wharton then hit an unbeaten 69 and young Alfie Turner shone with 38 as Horspath clinched victory at 153-3 in the 31st over. The win sees Horspath finish the season in seventh place. Horspath 2nd, who were already relegated, ended the campaign with a four-wicket defeat at home to Twyford. Acting skipper Dom O'Connor led the way with 65 as Horspath were bowled out for 215 after being put in to bat. His runs came off 58 balls with 13 fours, while Jehan Mohammed weighed in with 49 and Nigel Coltman made 37, but the innings fell away from 182-3 as Horspath lost their last seven wickets for 33 with Atif Ali taking 4-28 and Bilal Afzal 3-32. Twyford then raced to 218-6 in the 35th over with Shabaz Alam hammering 88 off 65 with five sixes and 11 fours. Muhammad Asif Shah (38) and Afzal (32) provided good support as Jehan completed another fine all-round effort by taking 3-36, while Tyrone Eyles picked up 2-50. Horspath 3rd are also relegated following a one-wicket defeat at Bletchley Town in Division 4.
