Horspath off to flier in Club Championship

HORSPATH'S first venture into the Royal London Club Championship proved a successful one with a 26-run home win over Radlett. Having been put in to bat on a cold, windy afternoon, Horspath posted a respectable 173-6 off 40 overs in the first-round tie. Robbie Eason (25) and James Fitzjohn (31) produced steady contributions early on. Jehan Mohammed had moved nicely on to 19 in the middle of the innings when he edged a delivery into his face and suffered a nasty injury to his right eye, which required him to be taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital. Everyone at the club wishes Jehan a speedy recovery. It was left to Jamil Faruq (34no) and Mark Skelton (28no) to provide the late momentum and take Horspath to their final total, while Darren James (3-24) was the pick of the Radlett attack. Horspath's bowlers then quickly got stuck into the Saracens Hertfordshire Premier League club's batting, reducing the visitors to 46-6. But the hosts were kept at bay by Fakir Dungaria and Duncan Fraser (20), who put on 67 for the seventh wicket to keep Radlett in contention. However, Horspath reasserted their grip on the game with off-spinner Tom Cosford (4-18) and left-arm seamer Liam Manley (3-28) leading the way as Radlett were all out for 147 from 36.3 overs. Dungaria was the last man out for 53 off 68 balls, which included one six and six fours. Horspath can now look forward to an away tie at Aston Rowant in round two on Sunday, May 13.
